Lucky Listener Initiative

We are excited to announce a new building-wide initiative that started this week. Based on our ongoing goal to create a focused and positive learning environment, we are putting a special spotlight on a fundamental skill to follow directions. Throughout the next few weeks until spring break, staff will be looking for students who respond to directions quickly and appropriately. When they do, they’ll earn a "Lucky Listener.

Each class is working together to collect at least 80 Lucky Listeners. Classes that reach this goal will earn a special Picnic Lunch Day on March 20.

Parents can support this initiative at home by:

  • Asking your child if they earned any Lucky Listeners today.
  • Reinforcing the importance of "first-time" listening at home.
  • Celebrating their efforts to be a positive leader in their classroom.

5th Grade Transitions to Wood Oaks

We are planning several spring transitions for our fifth graders as they prepare for Junior High School. Parents of fifth grade children should have received an email from Wood Oaks Principal, Mrs. Beake, this week with more information. There will be an informational session in the evening of April 16 at Wood Oaks at 6:00 PM for PARENTS ONLY of current fifth grade children. Information about the transitions can also be found on our website

Lunch Groups Updated on March 9 (Repost)

As we move into the third trimester, the lunch/recess rotations will update so that the fourth graders will be back together again, and the third grade classes will be split for the lunch and recess period. We’ve found this shared experience of splitting the lunch by trimester works well to balance the need to run an efficient school schedule while maintaining and extending friendships. Also, no grade level is divided for more than a trimester. If your child expresses concern that a friend may have a different recess, please let their teacher know so we can work to make the short 20-minute recess period enjoyable during the transition. We are also promoting the use of the Buddy Bench as a way to help encourage friendships and play.

Illinois Science Assessment (Fifth Grade Only) (Repost)

All Shabonee fifth graders will be taking the Illinois Science Assessment (ISA) on March 10, 11, and 12. The IL State Board of Education requires that all public school fifth and eighth grade students take this test as a measure of their science knowledge. The test is computer-based and will be administered in three parts, each taking about 45 minutes.

Grade 4 Orchestra and Band Performance on March 10 (Repost)

The Shabonee 4th grade students participating in band and orchestra will perform at 6:30 PM in the Shabonee Gym on March 10. There will not be a performance during the school day. All performers should arrive at 6:00 PM and wear their black Northbrook 27 music shirt, black pants, and black shoes.

The doors will open at 6:00 PM for the 6:30 PM performance. Please do not arrive earlier as the building will not be open. Park only in dedicated parking spots and use extra caution when entering and leaving school grounds. Parking is available in the main lot located off Pfingsten Road, the alternate lot located off Moon Hill Drive, and overflow parking is available behind the gym once the parking lots are completely filled. 5th Grade Performance “STOP, DROP, and GLOW!” on March 17 (Repost)

The 5th Grade Black Light Show will take place on Tuesday, March 17. The students will perform in “black light,” which means the gym will be dark except for the glow of black lights on the stage. The fifth graders helped develop and prepare this entire performance, from the choreography to the artwork and props. There are two performances, one for the school at 2:00 and another at 6:30 PM in the Shabonee gym for families. Performers should dress in all black, except for black or white socks, for the entire day. The afternoon performance will be live-streamed. A link to the stream will appear as a pop-up window on our school website shortly before the performance starts.

The doors will open at 6:10 PM for the 6:30 PM performance. Performers report to their afternoon classrooms while the audience finds a seat in the gym. Please do not arrive earlier as the building will not be open. We encourage you to carpool with friends and neighbors. Park only in dedicated parking spots and use extra caution when entering and leaving school grounds. Parking is available in the main lot located off Pfingsten Road, the alternate lot located off Moon Hill Drive, and overflow parking is available behind the gym once the parking lots are completely filled. You may enter at Doors A or N beginning at 6:10 PM. The gymnasium has stairs. Please call the school office in advance if you have special needs accessing the space so that we can make arrangements with you.

Information is posted on the Shabonee Performing Arts page. This page includes information about our music program, upcoming events throughout the year, and so much more. For evening performances, we also include event parking information.
