School is not in session on Labor Day, Monday, September 4.
Thank you for your support during our annual curriculum night on Wednesday. We appreciate the strong partnership we have with the parents of our students. The following curriculum overviews highlight units of study in reading, writing, math, science, and social studies.
Required Safety Drills (Reminder)
Each year, we are required by the state of Illinois to conduct safety drills. We will practice at least one of each of the following drills: Bus Evacuation, Shelter in Place (Tornado), Evacuation (Fire), and Active Intruder (Lockdown). Students and staff will be practicing each of these drills. Shabonee children will practice a lockdown drill on September 6. Additional information about the lockdown drill can be found in this letter.
Clubs and Activities
Shabonee offers several extra-curricular activities. Interest forms for all extra-curricular activities will be completed online. Parents will receive information in next week’s parent newsletter with more information.
Student Phones & Smartwatches
We ask for your cooperation in maintaining the learning environment. Children's use of cellular phones and smartwatches during the school day disrupts the learning environment. These devices are prohibited from being used during school hours. Cell phones should remain off during the school day. If children need to reach a parent during the day, they are directed to consult with a teacher or make a phone call from the school office. If your child has a personal device, please help us to help them use it appropriately at school. Parents should not text or call a child during the school day. If you need to get a message to your child, call the office, and we can deliver a message to your child at an appropriate time during the school day. Thank you for your partnership in this effort.
Picture day is Wednesday, September 27
Save the date! Picture order forms will be sent home with students soon. If your child is absent from school on picture day, they will be able to take pictures on the make-up date on November 8.
Canvas and Technology Support for Parents (Canvas, Infinite Campus Parent Portal, and Class Link)
Shabonee classroom teachers use Canvas to send notifications to parents about classroom news, and there is content on the Canvas pages that helps extend and support learning.
As school is underway and many student assignments are posted online, especially at the upper elementary and middle school levels, the Technology Resources for Parents landing page is intended to be a valuable resource for parents. You can reach this page through any of the school websites or the District website by hovering over the Parents tab and selecting Technology Resources. This landing page will help you discern which of the top three technology applications to use and for what function. If you are directly supporting your child with school work, we advise you to log into ClassLink using your child’s credentials. ClassLink is a single sign-on application that students continue to use, which will allow access to all online resources used at the student’s grade level. Depending on the grade level of your child, it may take a few weeks before the students have their credentials and have everything set up in ClassLink. The Parent Canvas mobile app is also a highly useful tool for parents. Please consult the Technology Resources page for descriptions of when you would use this mobile app. Under the Canvas Support tab, we have loaded several short videos (90 seconds or less) to show how to navigate the Canvas app and use the features. Thank you for your partnership!
Lunch reminders
The PTA-sponsored hot lunch program began this week. Information about ordering can be found in the PTA section of the newsletter. Please remember to send lunch with your child on Tuesdays when hot lunch is unavailable.
If your child forgets his/her lunch at home, you can drop off the lunch on the black cart in the foyer in Entrance A (main entrance). Each shelf will be identified by grade level. You can quickly drop off the lunch on the grade level shelf. Please make sure to write your child’s name on their lunch. We will make sure children receive it before the lunch period.
