Terra Nova

We had a slightly different schedule this week as the students completed the Terra Nova assessment during part of the mornings. Make-up testing will take place on Monday and Tuesday for the children who were absent. The results of the assessment will be mailed home later in January.

First Trimester Report Cards Are Now Open

Parents can access the first trimester report cards electronically on December 2 after 12:00 PM via Parent Portal. Report cards are available electronically upon the conclusion of the first and second trimesters, and a printed copy will go home with students on the last day of the third trimester.

For instructions on accessing your child’s report card on Infinite Campus, view this 30-second video. The first section of the video is for Wood Oaks students, and the second section addresses kindergarten through fifth grade

 In Summary:

  1. To access your child’s report, log into Parent Portal.
  2. Then on the left click “More.” On the new main window, you can now click “Online report cards.”
  3. You will need to choose your child’s name from the drop-down menu, then the report card you wish to view.

Upcoming Instrumental Music Performances

Band: Wednesday, December 7

Orchestra: Thursday, December 8

Our winter Band and Orchestra concerts are coming up next week. There are two performances each day. One will be for students only and another for families in the evening. The daytime performances will be livestreamed for those that cannot attend in the evening. A popup message will be posted on our website with the link to view the performance each day.

The students are excited to perform, and we look forward to a terrific evening together. All performers should arrive no earlier than 6:30 PM and go to their designated warm-up space.

Warm Up Locations

  • 4th Grade Band: Flex Space
  • 5th Grade Band: SDR
  • 4th and 5th Grade Orchestra: Flex Space

Please do not arrive earlier as you will not be able to enter the building. Doors A, N, and E will be open at 6:30 PM. Parents, family, and friends will go directly to the gym to be seated. The concerts begin at 7:00 PM in the gym. Consider carpooling with friends and neighbors, and please use extra caution when entering and leaving school grounds at night. Parking is available in the main lot located off Pfingsten Road, the alternate lot located off Moon Hill Drive, and overflow parking is available behind the gym. Please only park in designated parking stalls and do not park in areas that are identified by parking cones. These areas must remain open to abide by fire code. Violators are subject to ticketing from the Northbrook Police Department. Please drive safely and ensure the safety of others. We want this to be a great evening for everyone and need your cooperation.

2023-24 School Calendar

The Board of Education recently approved the 2023-24 School Calendar. The calendar is now posted on the District 27 website

Weather and Recess

The cold weather is upon us now.  Children are encouraged to wear layers for the variety of activities that take place throughout the day. To alleviate missing winter coats, gloves, hats, scarves, etc.  please label your child’s garments with his/her name. It’s really incredible how many missing items pile up so quickly!  The lost and found will be donated or thrown away at the winter break. Encourage your child to check the items in the coming weeks if they are missing anything. As a reminder, we go outside for recess unless:

  • Temperature is below 15 degrees
  • Heavy new snow of three inches or more
  • Rain, regardless of the amount
  • The temperature, when combined with the wind speed, produces a wind chill of 10 degrees or below

Some children relax and unwind by playing outside. Others prefer to read a book and enjoy quiet time before starting the second half of their school day. The library is open and supervised during recess for those children that prefer quiet time with a book Monday through Thursday. Shabonee librarian, Mrs. Alexander, has been talking with the children about the expectations for this time of day if a child chooses to participate.

Open Gym on Saturdays at Shabonee and Wood Oaks

The Shabonee and Wood Oaks gyms will be open for basketball for students and community members from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on the following Saturdays:

  • Nov. 19, 2022
  • Dec. 3 & 10, 2022
  • Jan. 7, 2023
  • Feb. 4 & 25, 2023
  • March 4 & 18, 2023

The gyms are only open for basketball. Supervision will be provided by our professional staff. Attendees will be expected to follow all rules established by the supervisors. All students in grades K-5 must be accompanied by an adult. We are asking that students in grades K-5 and their parents use the gym at Shabonee. Wood Oaks students (grades 6-8) should use the large Wood Oaks gym located on the west side of the building. High school students and adult community members should use the small Wood Oaks gym located on the north side of the building. All participants must be picked up by 12 p.m. Those attending must sign in and out. The District has found this program to be very successful in the past and we are thrilled to be able to offer it once again!
