Shabonee Newsletter - No School Monday, Conferences, Cell Phones, Testing Results...

Monday, September 26 is a District 27 holiday, and school is not in session.

Parent-Teacher Conference Sign Up (Reminder)

Parent-teacher conferences will take place on October 26, 27, and 28. Conferences are 15 minutes so that parents can meet with both teachers together. We’ve found this structure works best given our partner teaching model. We are using Meet the Teacher to sign up for conferences giving the parent more control over their schedule. The conference sign-up system will open on September 29 at 9:00 AM. Information about how to sign-up for a conference with your child’s teachers was emailed to you on September 21. As always, please contact your child’s teachers or the school office if you have any questions or concerns. Parent-teacher conferences are just one of the opportunities to talk about progress and parents are welcome and encouraged to reach out to their child’s teacher(s) at any time during the school year. It’s truly through our collaborative efforts that our students achieve success.

Cell Phones and Smartwatches

We ask for your cooperation in maintaining the learning environment. Children's use of cellular phones and smartwatches during the school day disrupts the learning environment. These devices are prohibited from being used during school hours. Cell phones should remain off during the school day. If children need to reach a parent during the day, they are directed to consult with a teacher or make a phone call from the school office. If your child has a personal device, please help us to help them use it appropriately at school. Parents should not text or call a child during the school day. If you need to get a message to your child, call the office and we can deliver a message to your child at an appropriate time during the school day. Thank you for your partnership in this effort!

STAR & IAR Testing Results

The results from the Fall STAR reading and math assessments will be mailed home on Tuesday. These assessments measure a student’s general knowledge in reading and mathematics. The tests are computer-adaptive. Computer-adaptive tests (CATs) continually adjust the difficulty of each child’s test by choosing each test question based on the child’s previous response. If the child answers a question correctly, the difficulty level of the next item is increased. If the child misses a question, the difficulty level is decreased. CATs save testing time and spare students the frustration of answering items that are too difficult or easy. Students typically complete the assessments in 20 to 30 minutes. The assessments are given three times during the year (fall, winter, and spring), and results are mailed home after each administration.

The mailing will also include the results of the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) that students in grades 3-8 took last spring. Additional information about the comprehensive District 27 assessment system can be found on our website

Picture day is Wednesday, September 28 (Final Reminder)

Save the date! Picture order forms have been sent home. A copy of the form is available for download. If your child is absent from school on picture day, they will be able to take pictures on the make-up date.

Math Extensions for Grades 3 & 4 Students

The Math Extensions program is a one-day-per-week pullout program that takes place during the math block for students who qualify for math enrichment. The program serves a very small population of students who meet the program criteria. Parents of children in grades three and four are being notified over the next week if their student met the established criteria to participate in session one of Math Extensions. Session two for grades three and four will begin in February. All children will be reviewed again at that time. Additional information about math content, the placement process, and program criteria can be found on the District 27 website. The upcoming parent-teacher conferences are an ideal time to talk with your child’s math teacher about his/her math progress.
