Students and staff acknowledged Patriot Day with a special morning announcement today. I spoke with the children about what it means to be a patriot and show their patriotism. I also encouraged them to show kindness and respect while encouraging them to go out of their way to do kind things for others in honor of this day.
Every year we administer STAR assessments in September, January, and May. We give the math test to students in grades K-8, with the exception of students in our Algebra and Geometry courses. The STAR Reading assessment is administered to students in grades 2-5.
Testing will begin the week of September 14.
- Students attending in-person school: We will administer the assessments across two days per content area to ensure that students are able to take them in the classroom.
- STAR Reading will take place on Monday or Tuesday when in-person
- STAR Math will take place on Wednesday or Thursday when in-person
- Information was shared with families of children who are fully remote via email.
For additional information on STAR assessment, please consult the District 27 website.
Resources to Support Families
I want to continue to remind families that the school and district websites have many resources for parents as we navigate learning during times of the pandemic. If an emergency arises with technology, please call the school office. However, we also want parents to use the tech support form as much as possible so that we can monitor the types of requests and provide resources and tools to assist families during these unique times.
Information about Art and Music for Students on Hybrid Schedule (Grades 2-5)
Art: If your child attends school in person but does not have art due to the class schedule, please be on the lookout for an art sketchbook that your child will be bringing home. When your child is on a remote day, he/she has the option to do the art lessons on the art teacher’s Canvas page. Your child should do the projects in the sketchbook.
Music: If your child attends school in person but does not have music due to the class schedule, please encourage your child to do some of the activities on the music teacher’s Canvas page during the remote days.
At the semester mark, we will be adjusting schedules so that students will have access to art and/or music in-person if they did not have one of them during the first semester. The adjustment in schedules will NOT have any impact on the overall A/B schedule.
Picture day is Coming
Save the dates! Picture days are Wednesday, September 23 for Group A, and Thursday, September 24 for Group B. Additional information will be shared with families of children that are fully remote. Picture ordering information was emailed home on Thursday, September 10. If your child is absent from school on picture day, he/she will be able to take pictures on the make-up dates on November 4 and 5.
Required Safety Drills
Each year we are required by the state of Illinois to conduct safety drills. We will practice at least one of each of the following drills: Shelter in Place (Tornado), Evacuation (Fire), and Active Intruder. We will be practicing all of the exercises in the coming weeks.
Dismissal From Shabonee
Thank you to everyone that picks up children via car after school. The process is going very well as vehicles pull up to the student loading area. Please continue to drive cautiously. For families that pick up fifth graders in the front of the school, please pull all the way forward to the next car so that traffic does not back up onto Pfingsten Road. There is plenty of room to do so and avoid any potential issues.
The Math Extensions program is a one day per week pullout program for students who qualify for math enrichment. The program serves a very small population of students who meet the program criteria. All students are screened for potential placement in the program. Families of children in grades four and five have been notified. Third grade Math Extensions is suspended while our youngest students become reacclimated, and performance assessments are administered. We will review student performance in the winter when additional information is available. Please reference our website for specific math content, the placement process, and program criteria.
Curriculum Night Video Content (Reminder)
The teachers have prepared videos for parents to view at your leisure and will remain up for the next several weeks. Resources are included below to assist you in accessing the content. The specials area classes, including Art, Music, and P.E. can be found in Canvas. The librarian’s video is included on our webpage. We hope that you enjoy learning about the upcoming school year. As always, thank you for your partnership, and we look forward to our continued collaboration with you throughout the school year.
We highly recommend using the Canvas Parent App because parents can toggle between children. Navigating Canvas Parent App for All Children
Band and Orchestra for Grade 4 (Reminder)
Information was sent to the families of fourth grade students from the instrumental music teachers. Students will have the opportunity to choose a band or orchestra instrument and begin music lessons if they are interested. Parents should have received an email with a link to the Instrument Selection Website on Thursday, September 10. The website has videos of each instrument, demonstrated by the District 27 instrumental music teachers. There is a Google form on the website to indicate your child's top three choices. After submitting this form, the instrumental music teachers will follow up with you about your child's instrument selection. For questions, please contact:
