The 2020-21 School Year Comes to a Close

What a year! As the students and staff embark on the summer hiatus, I want to thank all of our families and staff for their collaboration to help our young students achieve academic and social-emotional success. This school year was like none other. The support from our families was tremendous, and we are grateful for your assistance from start to finish. Our Dolphins finished the year strong and are ready to keep SWIMing. We wish our fifth graders well as they embark on the journey to Wood Oaks!

I also want to thank our very dedicated and generous PTA members for all of their support. From helping secure support to providing innovative ways to engage children and share kindness with the staff, the PTA helped make this year go well.

On behalf of all the Shabonee staff, we want to wish everyone a wonderful summer!

Class Mailing in August

We look forward to seeing our incoming third, fourth, and fifth graders on Wednesday, August 19, for the first day of the 2021-22 school year. As a reminder, teacher information will be available through the Infinite Campus system about a week before school begins in August. We will also send a mailing with other essential information to start the school year. Please reference the school website for additional information and news as it becomes available throughout the summer, especially as the school year draws near.

Report Card Access Is Open Now

Parents can access the third-trimester report cards electronically on June 2 after 12:00 PM via Parent Portal. You will need the same login and password that you used for registration.

For instructions on accessing your child’s report card on Infinite Campus, view this 30-second video. The first section of the video is for Wood Oaks students, and the second section addresses kindergarten through fifth grade.

Here is a summary of the steps:

  1. To access your child’s report, log into Parent Portal.
  2. Then on the left click “More.” On the new main window, you can now click Online report cards.
  3. Once you click on that, you will need to choose your child’s name from the drop-down menu, then the report card you wish to view.

Summer Opportunities

Book Match

Looking for ideas on what to read this summer? Take a look at the new 2021-2022 Shabonee Book Match list! This optional program encourages teamwork, friendly competition, and reading some fabulous books across multiple genres and various reading levels. The competition takes place during library classes during April. More details will be shared with students next school year.

Students interested in participating are encouraged to read ten or more books from the Book Match reading list prior to April. (Click here for the 2021-2022 list.) All books will be available at the Northbrook Public Library this summer and the Shabonee library next year.

Northbrook Public Library's "Reading Colors Your World" Summer Reading Program starts now! Students can log minutes read over the summer by signing up through NPL's website, and earn some fabulous prizes! The Drive-Through Kick-Off event occurs this weekend. Click here for details!

Reflex Math Open Through July 31 (reminder)

Math fact fluency refers to accurately recalling the basic facts in multiplication and division quickly and effortlessly. When children gain automaticity with these facts, they have attained mastery that allows them to remember them without conscious effort or attention. Children who have achieved fluency can devote their working memory to problem-solving and learning new concepts and skills. When a child has not gained fluency, it hinders progress with problem-solving as the child is using the working memory to compute the operation instead. To help support your child’s fluency growth, the district has extended the Reflex Math membership through at least July 31, 2021. Your child will be able to log into his/her account even though the school year has ended. As a parent, you can login using your child’s information to check on his/her progress. This will help to support your child’s transition to the next grade. If your child has difficulty using the program, please feel free to use flashcards or other online resources.

PTA School Supply Kit Ordering (OPTIONAL) for incoming 2021-22 Grade 3, 4, & 5 Students

The PTA is looking forward to welcoming your child back to Shabonee in the fall! It’s that time of year again... As you know, the Shabonee PTA organizes school supply kits that you can order online and have delivered to your child’s classroom in lieu of heading to the store and purchasing supplies on your own. A great time and money saver!

Seeking Volunteers

We are looking for volunteers to help sort and deliver school supply sets to classrooms on Friday, August 13th from 9:30am to 12:30pm.

For any questions or to volunteer to help sort supplies, please contact Apryl Schlueter.

School supply lists for next year will be available on the Shabonee website this summer for those families that prefer not to purchase a kit through the PTA.
