Thank you to our families who were able to attend parent-teacher conferences. We appreciate the ongoing collaboration and communication with you to help our students be successful and happy at Shabonee. Please contact your child’s teachers at any time if you have questions or concerns.
Classroom Valentine celebrations will take place on February 14 at the end of the afternoon. Children may bring Valentine cards as long as they include everyone in their class. If they have friends in other classes, distribution of those cards should take place outside of school since they won’t be able to visit other classrooms during the day. To maintain our safety practices and encouragement of healthy eating, please do not include candy, even as part of the card. Thank you for your cooperation to make the parties a happy and safe occasion for everyone.
Erin’s Law Assembly (reminder)
In compliance with State law, a program on child sexual abuse awareness and prevention will be presented to students on February 19, 2019. The presentations will be made by Victor Pacini, author, song writer, singer and motivational speaker. He will be assisting our schools in implementing this mandate. His program is developmentally appropriate, interactive, and aligned with learning standards. He is native to the area and has presented in front of over a million students and parents in numerous districts in Illinois and nationwide. We are excited to have him join us on February 19.
The program is being scheduled in response to Erin’s Law, a State law requiring that all public schools implement a sexual abuse awareness and prevention curriculum for grades K-12. For additional information about Erin’s Law, please visit www.erinslaw.org.
The presentations will cover the following topics:
- Safe touch, unsafe touch, confusing touches
- Private body parts (parts of the body covered by a bathing suit)
- Good and bad secrets
- Saying “no” to unwanted touches
- Safety steps and reporting
These presentations are designed to empower and educate children in a developmentally appropriate, child-friendly manner. If you do not wish for your child to participate in this program, please email Shabonee Principal, Mr. Panozzo, informing him of your request to have your child excluded. A confirmation acknowledgment of your request will be sent.
Blacklight Show on February 12, 2019 (Reminder for parents of fifth graders)
The annual fifth grade black light show is coming up in a few weeks. This has become a Shabonee tradition for our fifth graders who help develop the performance. Fifth grade children create their own props during art class and choreograph the routines during music class, along with the accompanying music.
For the evening performance, doors to the school will open at 6:40 PM. Please do not arrive earlier as you will not be able to enter the building. Also, consider carpooling with friends and neighbors because parking tends to fill up for this performance. Park only in dedicated parking spots and use extra caution when entering and leaving school grounds. Parking is available in the main lot located off Pfingsten Road, the alternate lot located off Moon Hill Drive and overflow parking is available behind the gym. You may enter at Doors A, N, or E at 6:40.
