Monday, March 1, is a teacher institute day, and school is not in session for students. 

Third Trimester and Report Cards

Tuesday begins the third and final trimester of the school year. The second trimester report cards will be available for parents via Parent Portal on Friday, March 12 at 3:00 PM. Instructions to view the reports will be included in future newsletters. 

Erin’s Law  

In compliance with State law, a program on child sexual abuse awareness and prevention will be presented to children in District 27. Shabonee students will participate in the program on Friday, March 12, 2021. The presentations will be made by Childhood Victories, a local agency that provides age-appropriate sexual abuse education and prevention.

The program is being scheduled in response to Erin’s Law, a State law requiring that all public schools implement a sexual abuse awareness and prevention curriculum for grades K-12. The presentations by Childhood Victories will cover the following topics, by grade level:

Hickory Point K-2 

  • Safe touch, unsafe touch, confusing touches
  • Private body parts (parts of the body covered by a bathing suit)
  • Touching rule
  • Three safety step rules
  • Good and bad secrets

Shabonee 3-5 

  • Safe touch, unsafe touch, confusing touches
  • Saying “no” to unwanted touches
  • Safety steps
  • Private body parts
  • Touching rule
  • Secrets

Wood Oaks 6-8

  • Child sexual abuse (explanations and myths/facts)
  • Empowerment
  • How to say “no”
  • Who to tell

These presentations are designed to empower and educate children in a developmentally appropriate, child-friendly manner. If you do not wish for your child to participate in this program, please email Shabonee Principal Dr. Panozzo, before March 10, 2021 informing him of your request to have your child excluded from the Erin’s Law presentation. A confirmation acknowledgment of your request will be sent.

Reading Photo Raffle for the Spring Virtual Book Fair 2021 (Reminder and Spirit Days added) 

The PTA virtual book fair will run between March 2 and March 15. Would your child like to win a free book from the book fair and a gift card to a local restaurant? Enter our reading photo raffle for your chance to win during our virtual spring book fair! Just snap a photo of your child reading and submit it using this form to enter the raffle. Photos submissions will be shared with fellow Shabonee Dolphins in a fun slideshow during library classes.

During the last six days of the book fair, one winner will be announced each day (March 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, and 15). Mrs. Alexander will connect with each winner to select from an assortment of prize books, and families will be notified.

  • Only one submission per student, please
  • The photo must clearly show your child reading
  • Entries will only be accepted between 2/19/21 - 3/7/21

The name and photo associated with your Google account will be recorded when you upload files and submit them. Please contact Shabonee Librarian, Mrs. Alexander, if you have any questions. 

Spirit Days Added

March 9 - Cookbook Day (Ideas: any food-themed t-shirts or clothing, dress up as a Chef, wear an apron, carry a wooden soup spoon)

March 10 - Science Fiction OR Science Nonfiction Day (Ideas: dress up as an alien or robot, represent a favorite planet with the colors you wear, dress up as a Scientist)

March 11 - Biography Day (Dress up as your favorite famous person! Make it as simple or as complex as you'd like.)

March 12 - Sports Book Day (This one is easy! Any sports-related clothing works!)

Families of fully remote students: 

The next remote pickup will take place on Thursday, March 4, from 4:00 - 5:30, following the same process used in previous pickup dates in the fall at Door A (main entrance). 

5Essentials Survey for Students in Grades 4 & 5 (Reminder) 

Students in grades four and five will take the 5Essentials survey during the school day between March 8 and March 12. This survey is based on many years of research at the University of Chicago. Students’ identities will be completely confidential, and teachers and administrators will never see individual responses to survey questions, only summary-level responses.

Please be aware that under the Protection of Pupil Rights Act. 20 U.S.C. Section 1232(c) (1) (A), you have the right to review a copy of the questions asked of your student(s). Survey questions are available on the 5Essentials website. If you DO NOT want your daughter or son to participate, please fill out the opt-out form and email it to Shabonee Principal, Dr. Panozzo, before March 5, 2021.

Substitute Teachers Needed (Reminder)

District 27 is still in need of substitute teachers for the remainder of the school year. If you are interested in learning more, please contact Theresa Fournier
