Shabonee Newsletter 12-21-18

A special “thank you” to all of our room parents who helped make the classroom holiday celebrations a great experience for the kids on Friday afternoon. The staff would like to thank the PTA for the incredible holiday luncheon they provided us on Thursday too. We are truly grateful for the collaboration we have with the families of our students. Our shared commitment to children is outstanding.

The Shabonee staff and I want to wish all of our families a wonderful holiday season as we embark on the two-week winter break. All District 27 schools will be closed from Monday, December 24 through Friday, January 4 for winter break.  Schools will reopen under normal school hours on Monday, January 7, 2019.

PBIS Dance Party Acknowledgement

As part of our December PBIS goal, classes worked on further developing self-control through self awareness behaviors during the month of December. Students that met their goal celebrated with a dance party on Friday morning. It was a fun way to acknowledge the incentive! As part of our fall PBIS activities, children created a “Kindness Quilt” that is now proudly displayed in the hallway by third grade. It turned out beautiful! A photo is included on our Twitter page.

STAR testing after break

Students will take the winter STAR tests, reading (on 1/9/19) and math (on 1/10/19), during their typical reading and math blocks. As a reminder, these assessments are administered in the fall, winter, and spring and provide teachers with information to help monitor student progress. The tests are computer-adaptive. Computer-adaptive tests (CATs) continually adjust the difficulty of each child’s test by choosing each test question based on the child’s previous response. If the child answers a question correctly, the difficulty level of the next item is increased. If the child misses a question, the difficulty level is decreased. CATs save testing time and spare students the frustration of answering items that are too difficult or easy. Students typically complete the assessments in 20 to 30 minutes. Information about the District 27 Assessment System is included on the District’s website for those that are interested in learning more.

PTA Family Night - January 11 from 6:30 - 8:00

The PTA sponsored Family Night will take place after winter break  on Friday, Jan. 11 in the Shabonee Gym. This family movie night activity is always a fun and popular event. This is not a drop off event. Children must attend with an adult. Please reference the details in the PTA news. We hope you can join us!
