Shabonee Newsletter 11-30-18

Report Cards come home Friday, November 30 with the children. Teachers reminded their classes that they are written for parents and are intended to be opened by the parent. Please check those backpacks and folders and contact the teachers if you have any questions.

We ran a slightly different schedule this week as students took the Terra Nova tests during part of each morning. It was a very successful week and we thank you for your cooperation to ensure the kids arrived on time and were ready for the morning. Testing will finish up on Monday due to the snow day this week. Students who were absent during any part of testing will make them up between Tuesday and Thursday next week. Results of the Terra Nova assessments will be shared with families near the end of January.

December PBIS Goal

The PBIS structure is intended to help promote positive behaviors throughout the school year and help children to help themselves be better learners. Based on our frequent review of data, the Shabonee PBIS Universal Team has created a goal where the entire school is working on self-control through self awareness behaviors for the month of December. Students will learn and apply strategies that help them focus on keeping hands and feet to themselves, such as using appropriate voice levels, and to compromise when working collaboratively. Classes will work to earn a dance party on December 21 as an acknowledgement for their efforts.

Choral Performance on Wednesday, December 5 at Wood Oaks 7:00 PM

On Wednesday, December 5 at 7:00 PM, Wood Oaks will host the annual District 27 Choral Festival. This event combines the vocal stylings of the Shabonee and Wood Oaks Choirs into one glorious evening. With the combined participation in these two music groups at almost 200 students, we expect a full house that night. We suggest arriving at the event early because we expect to reach capacity prior to the start of the concert. Once we are full, traffic will be diverted to Wood Oaks Green Park where there will be ample parking and a shuttle bus available to take concert goers to Wood Oaks. Buses will run after the concert as well until all remote parkers are returned to their vehicles. If anyone arrives at Wood Oaks just before the 7:00 start time, they should expect to miss the first 10-15 minutes of the show.

Tuesday, December 4 Rehearsal at Wood Oaks

Shabonee choral participants should arrive to Wood Oaks at 8:00 AM on Tuesday, December 4 for the rehearsal. Please be aware that traffic will be very congested as their students start the school day. Please be patient and drive cautiously as you drop off your children. Buses will return students to Shabonee after the rehearsal.

Weather and Recess

While fall is still officially here a little while longer, the cold weather and snow is upon us. Children are encouraged to wear layers for the variety of activities that take place throughout the day. To alleviate missing winter coats, gloves, hats, scarves, etc., please label your child’s garments with his/her name. It’s really incredible how many missing items pile up so quickly!  The lost and found will be donated or thrown away at the winter break. Encourage your child to check the items in the coming weeks if missing something. Children must be dressed in snow gear to play in the snow at recess. This ensures they stay both warm and dry. As a reminder, we go outside for recess unless:

  1. Temperature is below 15 degrees
  2. Heavy new snow of three inches or more
  3. Rain, regardless of the amount
  4. The temperature, when combined with the wind speed, produces a wind chill of 10 degrees or below

Canvas

Ever wonder what the Canvas app can do for you? Canvas is a powerful platform that not only extends learning experiences in and out of the physical classroom, but it also provides a means to keep parents informed about what children are learning or experiencing in school. When teachers send out a Canvas notification, it sends a snapshot of the announcement text to your email. You must use the app or login to your account to see the full content, which may include pictures, support documents, sample work, etc. If you haven't already downloaded the app, we are encouraging parents to download it as it may be helpful for staying informed and supporting your child. The Canvas app can enhance your viewing experience by:

  • Easily viewing K-5 photos/videos/attachments in announcements (currently not viewable in email)
  • Simply accessing classroom information, student’s calendar* and assignments* with one click anytime or any place (*Predominantly 4th-8th grade)
  • Instantly receiving push notifications that a classroom announcement has been posted

To get started:

Additional information for using Canvas can be found on the District 27 website. Please click the following link for valuable information and instructions for the Canvas MobileApp Setup Guide.  https://www.nb27.org/departments/technology/parent-resources
